Yopping Update 35 - a frog, a sock, a tree of life and firemen too!

Yes, I frogged this week. I picked up my Cookie A socks which I had cast on during my cast on flurry a number of weeks back, and working with the dark blue was making my eyes very tired and me very cranky. What's the fun in that. I have not abandoned the pattern, but I think I have just the homespun that will do perfectly. Stay tuned.

I finished the first quadrant of my baby blanket and it is very pretty, and knit up fairly quickly. Look at all those trees of life.

I picked up my Tibetan socks that I am making from homespun and voila

first sock done and ....

second sock to the heel so I will finish these tonight while watching the Oscars. On a side note the book in the picture is my go-to sock book. I have made every sock in the book, but these tibetan ones I have made at least ten times. I LOVE Cat Bordhi.

Oh and the firemen story....

I was swimming laps yesterday and had been in the pool about 30 minutes when out of the corner of my eye I noticed a flashing light I had never noticed before. I looked up and saw all the lifeguards ordering people out of the pool. This usually happens if a baby's diaper has failed and, well, you know.

But no, this time the lifeguard told me to follow everyone OUTSIDE! It was 7 degrees outside (celsius) but felt like it was 0. Luckily I had brought a towel onto the pool deck, something I rarely do, so I wrapped myself up and followed the line of people. A lovely man joked with me that he thought the pool was the safest place if there was a fire, and as I was already starting to shiver I agreed.

The staff were handing out extra towels, and I snagged another one, and although they didn't make us go right outside, they did make us stand near the doors in the large atria. I was tempted to snuggle up to the warm looking Dad who was holding his three year old, but I only stood close enough to get some of his body heat.

The firemen arrived all geared up and searched the building and finally determined it was a false alarm and the blasted alarms were turned off, but are still ringing in my ears.

They allowed we could go back to the change rooms but the pool wouldn't open for another five minutes while the lifeguards got reorganized.

I headed for the shower and turned on showers for all the little girls that were shivering. Once they let us back into the pool I headed for the hot-tub, then the steam room, then the sauna and then back to the shower.

I think I am warmed up now.

My excitement for the week. And why are ALL firemen so gorgeous? Is that is the job description? Wondering minds want to know.

We had snow again this week, but my hoya is blooming so I have to believe Spring will come. Two blossoms this time. I know my mother is looking down from the spiritual world giving me props.

I did get three things onto the blocking mat this week and took over the kitchen table for a day. I will post artsy pictures once they are dry and I can find a gorgeous model.

Please notice the sun coming in the window. Sun!! Made for a crummy picture, but SUN!!

And to close here is a picture of my long suffering husband.

If you want to follow other yoppers here they are.

  1. What an interesting read this post was - from your beautiful baby blanket to your favorite sock pattern to your false fire alarm story - brrrrrr, to your skeleton meme. lol. I can't stop laughing at that! BTW, I did notice the SUN! We've had one of the cloudiest winters on record and even though we've had 60-75 degree days over the last week I still find myself excited when the sun shines (even when now that it's back into the 30's). I was beginning to forget what sunshine looked like. So I feel your excitement! :)

  2. Oh how gorgeous are those tree of life quadrants. I may have trouble waiting to see more progress on this.
The Tibetan socks look so warm and cozy.
Lovely to see the hoya blooming in the half-sunlight, and what a great tale from pool, lol, I'm sure you enjoyed THAT eye-candy.

    1. Alas the pool story has ended with me having a rotten cold. Coincidence? I don't think so.

  3. Such a lot going on this week! I agree with being gorgeous is part of a fireman's job description! Shame you were too cold to appreciate them fully!
I hope the sun comes out for you and that your poor husband get a look in! :-)

  5. Best post of the week..there was drama, excitement, mystery, and progress and steamy showers and handsome men! Wow! You should win an Oscar! LOL! Speaking of Oscars....I checked to see if I could see the awards (I don't have satellite but I have a Roku) and they said that ABC News on my Roku would have the awards live streaming...well, what they had was 4 people sitting watching the awards that you couldn't see and then telling you what was happening...Really? I was able to watch the Superbowl on Roku and they are all about profit. You'd think it would be good for the movie business to promote the industry but evidently you need to pay to watch their awards...go figure?
The baby blanket is absolutely the prettiest I have ever seen! I'll have to look into that book by Cat. I've heard of her but never made any of her patterns but if you are making multiples out of that book then they must be winners! Your shawl that is blocking looks very similar to my Multnomah but of course yours is done and mine (per usual) is not. I hope Spring comes to you soon so you can thaw out after your cold, cold week! Have a good one!
P.S. I need to go check my Hoya which I call a Smilax (Arkansas name?). That's what the person that gave it to me called it. But I have had blooms like that on it and it is a plant that I can't kill...not that I want to but houseplants usually don't do well with me. Also, love the 'relaxed' hubby picture! LOL! Have a great week!

    1. I started to watch the oscars then got bored and turned to Columbo instead - I missed all the excitement when they announced the wrong winner for best picture. The Cat Bordhi book is fabulous with some really interesting architectures. And if you watch her you tubes she is very funny too as she explains things.

  6. The sun! I too am ready to emerge from the gray of winter. I sometimes feel like the gray skies are suffocating me... no room to breathe some days. The sun is starting to pop up more often here and the days get longer. your projects blocking in the sun look lovely!

    1. Usually by now we see daffodils and crocuses and snowdrops and cherry or apple blossoms - but this year? Nada. I so want Spring to come.

  7. Ooohhhh.....the tree of life baby blanket is yummy. Lucky the baby it goes to. Cat has some of the most interesting sock patterns. I too have a couple of her books but unlike you, have not knitted hardly any of the patterns. I laughed when you asked about firemen having to be good looking. I too have noticed that. So yes, it must be required. I shivered for you as you stood in the cold. And finally......the flowers are so pretty. Spring is in the air for sure.

    1. and the shivering led to a nasty cold - my mother was right! Don't go outside with your hair wet and not properly dressed!

  8. Oh so much going on. I wouldn't like to have been evacuated in my swimming costume, but firemen make up for it. I think it is part of the job description - several of my family are firemen, mostly by marriage but my family nonetheless. I love the tree of life blanket and your blooms look gorgeous.

  10. Haha. I've really enjoyed reading about your adventures and seeing your pictures. I know what you mean about blocking taking over the table! As usual you sense of humour tickles me too. Good for you for frogging projects that just aren't 'doing it' for you any more. I agree with questioning the merit of a project if it isn't fun for you when that is the aim. Life's too short but you certainly achieve a lot!

    1. the funny thing is I re-cast on the same sock pattern with the same yarn, but with different needles - and they were a simple knit in the end. It was good to just start over.
