O is for Owl hat

I think this hat made its first appearance in grade four. It belonged to one of the girls who had joined the class in grade one.

That hat came on every field trip, every camping trip, right through grade eight.

Usually she was wearing it, but often other students would be seen in it.

It became our mascot.

I am so glad they thought to include it on this quilt.

  1. That's a great reminder, and an original idea by the kids to include it on the quilt.

  2. This morning I took the time to read through all of your A through N entries and I have such strong feelings.First of all, the honor of receiving such a beautiful quilt from those students you loved and nurtured speaks volumes to the teacher you were. I am struck my the creativity and inspiration the children got from you and the great lessons and topics you were able to cover. The children were so fortunate. I think of all the young, fresh out of college teachers that I knew over the years who all had great ideas and such motivation to make a difference in their classrooms. Bit by bit the U.S. public school system drove that creativity out of them. I knew after 11 years of teaching that I no longer had that spark so I left. It is so much worse for public school teachers today when they are evaluated on how students perform on standardized tests. That is so not right! Every school should be able to apply Waldorf school principles. Off my high horse. Congratulations on a clearly successful teaching career. I very much enjoy the story of each quilt square.

    1. thank you so much. Yes, I started as a public school teacher and within two years had lost my love of teaching. I am so thankful that I found waldorf education for my children and for me to renew my love of teaching.
